O iv High Velocity Clouds : Where and What are They ?
نویسنده
چکیده
Our view of the high velocity cloud (HVC) system is changing dramatically with new observations from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer mission and the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph onboard the Hubble Space Telescope. In particular, the detection of Ovi absorption indicates that many HVCs have a hot, collisionally-ionized component in addition to the neutral gas detected in H i 21 cm emission. A better understanding of the ionization of this gas will help to determine the distances of some HVCs, as well as constrain the properties of a hot Galactic corona or Local Group medium. In this article, I briefly summarize some recent observations of Ovi HVCs.

The Diversity of High- and Intermediate-velocity Clouds: Complex C versus Iv Arch
We present Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) and Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) observations of interstellar ultraviolet absorption lines in the Galactic high-velocity cloud Complex C and the Intermediate Velocity Arch (IV Arch) in direction of the quasar PG1259+593 (l = 120. 6, b = +58. 1). Absorption lines from C ii, N i, N ii, O i, Al ii, Si ii, P ii, S ii, Ar i, Fe ...

In this contribution the current state of knowledge about the high-velocity clouds (HVCs) is summarized. Recent progress has shown that the HVCs are a diverse phenomenon. The intermediate-velocity clouds (IVCs) are likely to be part of a Galactic Fountain. The Magellanic Stream is a tidal remnant. HVC complex C (possibly complexes A and GCN) are low-metallicity clouds near the Galaxy; they coul...
متن کاملMulti - Phase High - Velocity Clouds toward He 0226 – 4110 and Pg 0953
We study the physical conditions, elemental abundances, and kinematics of the high-velocity clouds (HVCs) along the sight lines toward active galaxies HE 0226–4110 and PG 0953+414 using Hubble Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph and Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer data. No 21-cm H I emission is detected in these clouds, but our observations reveal multiple components of HVC absorption i...

The extra-planar H I in the inner parts of the Milky Way has been discovered to contain numerous cloud-like structures when observed in the 21cm line with the Green Bank Telescope. These halo clouds have motions consistent with Galactic rotation and do not seem to be related to the classic high-velocity clouds. They are found to distances >1 kpc from the plane and can contain hundreds of M⊙ of ...
